The Chills – Snow Bound Review

Chills front man Martin Phillipps hasn’t always worn it so well, but for a man who wrote one of 1990’s most inescapable songs in Heavenly Pop Hit he’s steered a smart course away from the career trapdoor of being his own covers act.

Snow Bound is the modern day version of the band’s second release since Phillipps put them back on full active duty and whilst it never strays from familiar musical patterns or subject matter, it’s loaded with more personal references than predecessor Silver Bullets.

Looking inwards can sometimes be a recipe for the maudlin, but Snow Bound finds The Chills as pop-orientated as ever on the likes of Bad Sugar and The Greatest Guide. World domination may no longer beckon, but Martin Phillipps seems just fine with that – and making some of the best music of his life.
