Former Walkmen singer Hamilton Leithauser and former Vampire Weekend omni talent Rostam Batmanaglij may have made for an awkward looking bromantic couple on paper, but I Had A Dream That You Were Mine was a record which could only have been made by two people working together for a good time, not a long time.
On it Leithauser’s gravelly, Methusulah sounding voice and Rostam’s studio trickery combined to create something timeless, a gritty blues with Tom Waits flourishes and a weary lyrical discourse full of characters bumping along life’s bottom.
I Had A Dream That You Were Mine was one broken man’s tale, a love story where it was hard to tell if the object of desire was real or not, the swill of stale whisky and dutch courage thrown against a backdrop of a ghostly band made up of of tin can players and the devil himself. It was the end, but what a finale.
