100 Greatest Songs of the 2010’s #64 Lana Del Rey – Video Games

Released : 2011

Lana Del Rey’s first single, like cuts being the deepest, was her best. It’s a love song into which you can infer a milion different dreams or nightmares. Is the singer really this smitten? Is the man of her dreams an emotional dwarf? Who’s in control? What’s going on when that “body gets taken downtown?”

But then again that’s the power of projection. Video Games is a love song operating at a level which few artists wish to tread, exposing the of the sort of hormonal devotion which last existed on Be My Baby, or Bobby’s Girl. It’s a naive obsessional, teenage lust, one delivered in an almost monotone which was part of an image that had the singer described as a “Gangster Nancy Sinatra” at the time.

It’s the curse of being human – seeing, wanting, posessing. Someone wrote a song about it. And it was wonderful.
