100 Greatest Songs of the 2010’s #57 M83 – Reunion

Released : 2011

Anthony Gonzalez may have spent most of the noughties feeling that it would never happen: Reunion’s mother album Hurry up, We’re Dreaming, was his 6th release as M83 in a career to that point already spanning a decade.

Until then he’d been largely in the shadow of countrymen Phoenix, but finally his widescreen dream pop notions took hold with the public, a breakthrough that came  after moving to LA and touring with big ideas bands such as The Killers and Depeche Mode.

Reunion was M83 at it’s most evocative, indebted to the synthy arena rock of the 1980’s – and most obviously Simple Minds’ Ghost Dancing – but also swatched the melodic frisson of Air, a song made for the Transatlantic generation. From now on, Paris could wait.
