100 Greatest Songs of the 2010’s #56 Cigarettes After Sex – Apocalypse

Released : 2018

There’s something devoutly Lynchian about Apocalypse, with it’s lyrics about super heroes and ghosts, childhood obsessions and secret trysts, the ambling, bittersweet guitar melody and the spun-candy vocals of singer Greg Gonzalez .

Combined, the song harnesses these innocent things to conjure up feelings of vulnerabilty, longing and lost romance, before Gonzalez mysteriously whispers “You’ve been locked in here forever” as if talking to a prisoner. What does he mean? Who is haunting who? In full on Twin Peaks fashion, these things never resolve, which makes this beautiful song as enigmatically strange as it’s Mom’s apple pie wonderful
