100 Greatest Songs of the 2010’s #52 Billie Marten – Bird

Released : 2015

Without wanting to sound…odd, there’s something richly mystical about a young voice that a more trained one just can’t replicate. Analogies will only complicate here, so best to say that on Bird, Isabella Tweddle/Billie Marten sounds as open and unworried by the maelstrom around her as you’d expect at the stage of life during which it was written.

A song as evocative as the listener wants it to be, the lyrics hint at an unexpected death, but in tone it could be harvest time in a country breeze or raindrops melting a city skyline at dusk.  We’re only young once, but not many of us create something as hauntingly beautiful as this.
