Moon Duo – Stars Are The Light Review

To this point San Franciscan duo Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada have been better known for making music to listen to with the blinds pulled down, a catalogue influenced by the likes of Suicide, post punk and the darker end of 60’s psychedlia.

For the sessions that produced Stars Are The Light the pair relocated to a rural complex in Portugal – and the change of location has had a profoundly upbeat effect on their music, bringing adding notable Balearic influences, best experienced on the sun-dappled opener Flying.

Sanae has admitted that the pair have used the freedom of early disco as a template for what is a startling departure, but it’s Lost Heads and Eye 2 on which they’re at their most expansive, both resembling the louche dream-pop of Air’s seminal Moon Safari.
