If there was always a suspicion that Jamie xx’s solo project was just the xx with the switch flicked to pop, so what? In Colour was the record which if you’d sat down before hand and tried to figure out how you could give the band’s music some curves, would’ve been exactly what you’d written down.
Loud Places wasn’t necessarily it’s best tune but is easily it’s most effective, unravelling slowly like Romy Madley Croft’s desolate charachter, the futility of trying to project someone else onto someone new overlaid to a spare piano and some clever processing. Amongst the four AM waifs, it was a story rarely better told.
