The Mysterines – Afraid of Tomorrows review

Instinct is a strange and sometimes unreliable thing for musicians to trust; if you let it influence your process too much often by the time your work makes it out into the world everything including you has already moved on.

For Liverpudlian quartet The Mysterines the way forward post their successful 2022 debut Reeling was even less clear. It’s brand of primal rock had earned them touring berths with the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, but for singer Lia Metcalfe and co. the option of following it up on the same chassis felt strongly like the wrong thing to do.

Afraid of Tomorrows accordingly is shaped more by real life experiences and the presence in the wings of icons such as Courtney Love and Karen O. Lovers of the cinematic will enjoy Sink Ya Teeth’s gothic tension, whilst Stray and the title track both dwell moodily on the present day phenomena of feeling rudderless and detached from your own life. The winner though is Another Another Another, a fractured break up song which Metcalfe’s anger sets into reassuring life. Trusting your instincts is a high risk game, but the rewards can be hard to deny.
