Efterklang – Things We Have In Common review

The back story to Things We Have In Common is a fascinating study in modern faith and it’s constructs. After scaling back his work with Danish collective Efterklang to become an occasional participant following 2007’s Parades, Rune Mølgaard subsequently became embroiled in the Mormon Church as the result of a relationship.

The group’s core – Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg – stayed in touch as Mølgaard over time became increasingly disillusioned with his chosen path, inviting him to collaborate on what would become an album over which he would have a significant influence.

Things We Have In Common is amongst many things about connection as well as having the veil lifted on situations, Shelf Break a literal unpacking of unraveling beliefs. Elsewhere Zac Condon adds some plaintive horn to Getting Reminders, but it’s Guatemalan cello player and vocalist Mabe Fratti whose contributions are most telling on Balancing Stones and Plant. Nothing reaches the heights of Piramida‘s creative apex, but the core messages of friendship and personal redemption are rarely uncompelling listening.
