If you want a real life example of how cool is handed down between generations, then you can look no further than Olivia Rodrigo. Currently tripping around the world on a tour to support Guts, the pop princess chose as support The Breeders, an experience that a slightly bemused Kim Deal has summed up by suggesting drily that it was the first time the audience had ever seen a band.
It’s something of a long shot that The Breeders are still a thing given the stuff which has got in the way since their peak in 1994’s Last Splash. For Deal’s part she’s continued writing material which could’ve ended up with the band, but Nobody Loves You More instead is her first solo album, partially worked on with the late Steve Albini, who gifted her the ukulele on which some of it was sketched out.
If an album under your own name is green light for experimentation, then the singer has accepted that invitation wholeheartedly. There are a couple of post-grungy workouts to keep the curmudgeons vaguely onside, but otherwise there flirtations with disco punk (Crystal Breath), retro chintz (Summerland) and even an orchestra (the titular opener).
Fittingly though it’s Albini who by roping in the Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza has a sort of last word on the album’s standout Coast. You can’t buy cool, and though neither he or Kim Deal ever wanted to be, Nobody Loves You More is the goddamn proof they both still are.
