Lauren Mayberry – Vicious Creature review

When Lauren Mayberry decided to make a solo album, it was all very grown up. Months before any material surfaced her and fellow Chvrches members Iain Cook and Martin Doherty discussed it, the sort of communication that doesn’t always happen in these circumstances.

Indirectly her motivation though was because she was in a band with two men, and despite enjoying over a decade of success up until that point, the singer felt that there would be a lot more room for creative maneuver if she was in full control.

Vicious Creature is the kind of record that gets made when the shackles come off. Traversing chart friendly synth pop (Something In The Air, Shame), emotionally charged ballads (Oh Mother, Are You Awake) and post grunge (Anywhere But Dancing), ideas are not in short supply. At it’s most interesting in the grimy industrial beats of Sorry, etc. there is a sense that things are a little too calculated throughout, but total control seems to suit Lauren Mayberry – just don’t tell Iain and Martin.
