100 Greatest Songs of the 60’s #8 The Supremes – Where Did Our Love Go?

Released: 1964

Aptly named in an era in which such a thing was about to have it’s golden age, The Supremes were the ultimate girl group; with a dozen number one singles the definitive line up of Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross were in command of the pop and soul landscapes throughout the decade.

In terms of their origins the quartet followed a similar pattern to many others of their generation, sharing roots in a common neighbourhood, in this case the Brewster Douglass housing project in Detroit. Sooner or later in the city if you had talent you wound up in the orbit of Berry Gordy, and after he renamed them in 1961 they initially had a run of uninspiring singles before When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes became their first hit.

It was written by the genius team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, as was Where Did Our Love Go; this time though the special sauce was in Ross’ vocals. A plaintive call to lost love, it was a perfect comeback letter to some Joe unwisely now on the run. Their foundational number, it was even beamed to the least available men around when the astronauts on Gemini 5 became the luckiest recipients of an invitation they wouldn’t have missed for all the world. The Supremes were ready to reign just so.
