The subject of artists who suddenly discover a specific quality to their music which they claim has always been present but nobody has ever heard is frankly, a road. Whilst probably a bit more of an honest appraisal like “We were messing about in the studio and somebody put Aphex Twin on by mistake” would be more helpful, in the case of Chris Duncan there’s certainly no cross to bear.
His fifth album, It’s Only A Love Song is he’s said rather than consisting of them, is just as much an exploration too. For those unfamiliar with his work to date, you should be assured that this is territory he’s very much entitled to claim, a catalogue that has made frequent use of soft focus emotions and balladry to good effect.
There is a necessary putting aside of modern cynicism required, but if as a listener that’s acceptable then tracks like the titular opening number – a love song about love songs – are here to mop your fevered brow. It’s not all bouquets however, as both Delerium and AOR thread Sadness deal with loss and confusion, but The Space Between Us weaves an intriguing and elegant path between the saccharine and the tangle of emotions even you – yes you – occasionally get yourself into.
