100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #90 Other Lives – We Wait

Released: 2020

When the pandemic began it was difficult to remember that the music you were hearing had been made in complete ignorance of it; as we stared at the four walls some things acquired a resonance that the creators wouldn’t possibly have imagined.

Jesse Tabish had been a founder member of Oklahoman pop punk band All American Rejects, but Other Lives fourth studio album For Their Love was a revelation; the singer had relocated to a dilapidated A-frame house in rural Cooper Mountain, Oregon and he’d found it a place to see ghosts and excorcise demons in equal measure.

An album full of rustic cues, We Wait was it’s centrepiece, a song written about the murder of his friend by one of the Reject’s inner circle. Cinematic and darkly beautiful, it resonated with the gothic Americana of Johny Cash or Smog echoing on the high plains. “Oh, we wait for you to rest” Tabish pondered, a process many were going through whilst the still world outside laid heavy against the doors and windows.
