It’s a rare (and lucky) life lived if at no point has the thing that’s scared you the most of all is yourself. Whether it’s now easy bad decisions were to make, or how you sometimes treated others under duress, or the vast range of things marked “Anything else”, we can all be pretty unpredictable humans at one time or another.
Bartees Strange had a vision for what would become Horror not long after finishing his debut Live Forever, the byproduct of a mental process which he’s said becomes like being possessed/obsessed by an idea. Given some license by the critical success of 2023’s Farm to Table, the singer went to work with producer Jack Antonoff on realising not having a reflection.
What transpires is a mash up of moods and styles, from a Weeknd-esque banger (Lovers), soulful travelogue (Lie-95) to straightforward bar rocker (Backseat Banton). The five skulls award though goes to Sober, if only because it rides a glistery Fleetwood Mac vibe without haunting their legacy. Looking inwards is the most terrifying notion of all. On Horror Bartees Strange is his own boogeyman, but this is a boo! you shouldn’t be afraid of.
