As is to be expected, what was originally known as Jungle when it first emerged in the clubs of south London in the early nineties has undertaken quite a metamorphosis in the three decades that have passed since. Once the absolute property of the underground, it’s edges have been smoothed and like grime and dubstep before it, interpretation is now firmly open.
In this anything goes arena the familiar amen break can be joined to anything, such that as pop has been further abbreviated (And mutated) by platforms like TikTok it’s development as a macro-genre constantly throws up fresh sounding material.
Piri & Tommy’s on and on shares the barest morsel of DNA with the likes of Shy FX or the Ganja Kru’s Super Sharp Shooter, but that hardly matters; Piri’s sugar and spice vocals are perfectly blank, whilst the loop curls and the refrain worms it’s way into the base of your cortex. Junglists and their children will love it.
