100 Greatest songs of the 2010’s #70 Fontaines DC – Hurricane Laughter

Released: 2019

Fontaines DC have evolved with every chapter, almost as silently promised in the excitement surrounding the release of their debut album Dogrel. The extent of this process is revealed now by relistening to tracks like Big or the playful Dublin rockabilly of Liberty Belle, but it was the gravitas of Hurricane Laughter that fuelled the conviction something special from was possible.

Sounding like The Fall if they had been completely rejuvenated and prised from the Liffey still breathing at their peak, it was a song of menace and chaos, singer Grian Chatten spitting out dead eyed prose whilst chaos rained down about him. Here was the seed of later brilliance, a song which seemed like an evil brother to almost everything else we’d heard to this point.
