Released: 2022
It’s a very crowded field, but arguably since 2013’s Drone Logic Daniel Avery has consistently been locking down one of the top slots in the DJ/Producer/Artist league. Starting out in the pensioner-friendly town of Bournemouth, following his relocation to London the stars began to align.
It was there that he met and worked with the legendary, gone far too soon maverick Andrew Weatherall and secured a residency at Fabric (Remember clubbing?). Avery wasn’t alone in being deeply affected by Weatherall’s passing, but luckily he had the tools to express it, dedicating the track Lone Sworsdman to his memory on his 2022 album Ultra Truth.
It was a record which he deliberately set out to make imperfect, in his own words produce something which would “Sound like it was on fire”. Wall of Sleep was a stellar tune amongst stellar peers, Australian HAAi adding a smattering of ghostly words to a dream laden, trance heavy sonic whirl. Being the best doesn’t even matter when you make noise as beautiful as this.
Very beautiful indeed!
