There comes a time in every person’s life where they have to decide what they are. In the case of Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland – aka Röyksopp – that question revolved most around choice – were they first and foremost artists, DJ’s, producers, performers, remixers or collaborators?
The answer was depending on the time and place was any and all of the above, in some part due to the legacy of Melody AM, their 2001 debut album which grafted hip-hop, downtempo, deep house and many other strains of electronic music into a leftfield classic. Returning after a hiatus with the Profound Mysteries series in 2022, they set off on a world tour to celebrate their newly rediscovered status.
As a kind of souvenir from that, True Electric perhaps unsurprisingly is a cross between a remix project, DJ mix and alt. best of package. Whilst by twenties standards it’s a bit of a marathon running time wise, reimagined versions of The Girl and The Robot, You Don’t Have a Clue, Monument and What Else Is There? are each in their respective ways reminders of a back catalogue steeped with invention. Never stood still, Röyksopp remain anything you want them to be.
