Cloth – Pink Silence review

Everything is open to interpretation. When Cloth’s Paul Swinton uses the words “muscular” and “Cinematic” to describe the goals they had for their third album’s sound, I, you, or anyone else will immediately apply their own connotations. In practice however Pink Silence however might not live enough in any of them.

But first some introductions; the band’s permament line up comprises Paul and his twin sister Rachael, whilst they’re signed to Mogwai‘s Rock Action label and are based in Glasgow. Given their past and the city’s track record of bringing us fey bedroom pop, muscular and cinematic sound like ambitious, if not slightly incongruous goals.

The reality though is something different. Joined by Mogwai’s Stuart Murdoch, Portishead‘s Adrian Uttley and composer Owen Pallett, the pair stride beyond the tiptoe dynamics of former outings, with Golden, It’s A Lot and Stones all at different vantage points along the indie spectrum. The standout here though is Polaroid, an extrovert introvert’s song which could interest a broader crowd than those who’re just here for the brooding. Muscular and cinematic? You decide.
