The Fall – Singles Live Vol.1 78-81 Review

Given their labyrinthine dealings with labels during the band’s lifetime, it does make sense that rather than pick through the soup of interested parties, The Fall’s back catalogue is better presented in a more concise way.

What Mark E. Smith would make of messrs. Hanley (P), Hanley (S), Riley and Scanlon’s Popstock label and it’s bootleg revivalism can only be guessed at, but following on from Slates Live! and Grotesque Live!, this new, if slight collection is another fitting memento of them and the old rascal in their early pomp.

Whilst the fly-in-the-ointment manifesto is recapped at the beginning of Psykick Dancehall with “We are The Fall, northern white trash that talks back”, attention here will inevitably focus on the band’s trio of early blockbusters in Rowche Rumble, Fiery Jack and irascible How I Wrote Elastic Man, all of which are shook, rattled and rolled mischievously. Old stuff, new twang, nuff said.
