What with all this talk of Artificial Intelligence n’ that, plagiarism is very much the enemy of creativity and the arts. So it comes with some difficulty to admit that somebody else had written an almost perfect description of Adult DVD, the Leeds six piece who grew, like city neighbours Yard Act, out of a lockdown friendship between two friends who were living together and had time on their hands.
Anyway, browsing for information about them is clearly NSFW, so credit where it’s due productions are happy to give props to Dom Smith of Soundsphere, who in a brief interview hit upon a label of the band’s collective recipe as “The head of Numan, the balls of Blur and the left knee of…Soulwax.” Singer Harry Hanson agreed.
In the same piece Hanson identified, with tongue in cheek, Bill Murray as the track that would end up being their legacy. On it DIY synth popping and glitchy psychedelic fritz square off against deadpanned rhymes like “Bill Murray, Bill Murray in a submarine/Tom Hanks, Tom Hanks looks big for thirteen”, the whole thing coming over as if they were Snapped Ankles, but from Meanwood. That joke’s probably stolen from somewhere too, but this is one Adult DVD you won’t need to wrap up in a brown paper bag.
