Released: 2023
Never take anything for granted. As messily as it ended, the Cocteau Twins career was littered with twitter-bye magic and fairy jig; on a planet of it’s own, theirs was ethereal music that at it’s best came from somewhere within the soul.
Whilst Robin Guthrie has continued to release material, his former partner Elizabeth Fraser has remained wilfully elusive, appearing in public rarely and performing even less. Then in 2022 came the announcent of the Sun’s Signature project, a collaboration with her partner Damon Reece and amongst others it was rumoured former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett.
Whilst some of the material’s provenance was familiar – Underwater had been Fraser’s debut single released at the turn of the millennium – it was Bluedusk that most contained strands of the old magic. Ushered in on blinking piano and a rolling timpani, it’s bare bones gave the singer’s angelic voice the air in which to cast spells, the paradisiacal swell warmly enveloping. As if we would ever have taken her for granted, this lightning in a bottle was proof that the everyday was a very different place.
