100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #50 Horsegirl – Ballroom Dance Scene

Released: 2020

There must be something peculiar in the waters near Chicago. From the same scene as compatriots/friends/bandmates/relatives Lifeguard – one they mutually dubbed Hallogallo – Horsegirl seemed to simply turn up fully formed with an archival mastery of early eighties post punk; pretty neat considering none of them had by that time left high school.

Penelope Lowenstein, Gigi Reece, and Nora Cheng were all years too tender to get the dynamics, but get them they did, and after self releasing their debut single Forecast in 2019, the Horsegirl: Ballroom Dance Scene EP followed the year after.

The title track was, unless the trio had appeared in front of you randomly and were playing behind a screen – sort of mindblowing. Based over little more than a whispering guitar strum, the interlocking vocals gave and took like a knotted conversation, a patchwork of waking dreams and notions that recalled fantastically and respectively both The Marine Girls and Stereolab. There must be something peculiar in the water by the lake. Like this, drink deep.
