The K’s – Pretty On The Internet review

Nothing should really suprise anyone anymore, but the gradual inversion of modern indie – ok, for context the mainly guitar based music which is largely native to Britain – from over to underground phenomenon has been one of the strangest cultural tweaks of the last decade or so.

You can argue the whys all night long, but as a for instance it’s almost impossible now to imagine even one of the bands at the top of it’s food chain such as Blossoms or The Courteeners dominating the conversation the same way an Imperial era Arctic Monkeys did.

Of course this doens’t mean that it’s finished, although the Gallagher brothers stodgy choice of supports will have disappointed many of the acts now charged with carrying the flame. From Warrington The K’s are certainly in that bracket, their 2023 debut album I Wonder If The World Knows? smashing into the upper reaches of the charts.

It’s follow up delivers a second helping. Singer Jamie Boyle uses it to lyrically explore themes surrounding mental health, for which he should be applauded. Collectively there’s also proof of some depth in the face of the lager and pyro cliches haters use to dismiss the wider game, Oh Helen I and Perfect Haunting more involved. The highlight though is Breakdown In My Bedroom, a banger which is still what they do best. The K’s are still an open secret, and Pretty On The Internet underlines why for now that’s what they’ll stay.
