100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #41 Dave, Central Cee – Sprinter

Released: 2023

Oh, the times – thank god – they are a changin’. Back in the 20th century having a number one single was an undeniable badge of honour in any country, but every so often earning the gong became more an indicator of cultural constipation than one of public joy.

Company men yes, even the sucker DJ’s who gave the listening public their weekly updates obviously struggled in presenting new angles to work on with Wet Wet Wet’s syrupy cover of Love Is All Around (15 weeks) and the torturous histrionics of Bryan Adams’ wretched Everything I Do (16 weeks).

Fast forward to 2023, and Central Cee and Dave collab Sprinter writes its own headlines. How much money could they earn? How many girls could you get into a van? Why was there a guitar line that sounded like it was by a shit hot busker running through? Who knew. Who cared. For 10 long weeks it smashed it at the summit of the UK’s charts- simultaneously a middle finger to the past and a party anthem with a license to print it’s own money.
