Upchuck – I’m Nice Now review

It certainly doesn’t hurt to have little (OK, a LOT) of empathy in this troubling era, but the idea of actually being able to project into the lives of others is one that can bring about some hard, face metaphorically up against the wall outcomes.

Upchuck are a punk rock outfit from Atlanta who grew up as skaters and are fronted by woman of color KT. Their last outing Bite The Hand That Feeds grabbed the attention of amongst others former Stooges frontman Iggy Pop, of whom the band are huge admirers.

I’m Nice Now may be a sarcastic kiss off of a title, but with producer Ty Seagal on duty again, there’s a conscious quality to the sometimes brutal material which is allowed to breathe. Whilst punk is a great vehicle for turning anger into energy as the hardcore leaning Fried and Kin prove, the unity of delivering Spanish language songs like Un Momento and Homenaje is proof that even if empathy fails, everybody still matters, or no one does.
