Nightbus – Passenger review

As much as we have romantic notions about the life of a musician, the reality 99 times out of 100 is very, very much less glamorous than most of them. When Olive Rees and Jake Cottier formed Nightbus for instance they had no idea how all consuming their choice of career would end up; it’s a destructive personal curve that inspires Landslide, one of the more effective tracks on their debut album Passenger.

Having released a stream of singles and EP’s to this point, popular comparisons were often made to artists like the xx, but Passenger is altogether darker, the gradually building trip hop of Host ending up messily stewing in it’s own remorse.

In melding together that, icy crepuscular synth pop, shoegaze even Burial‘s aquatic brand of dubstep, the pair have crafted a perfect mixtape for that gloomy subterranean club you know you shouldn’t go to. All aboard the bus, they’ll take you there.
