If we want it so much, can the past really ever come back? Some people want it to happen for all the wrong reasons of course, a reverse engineering of society and culture that suits their prejudiced worldview. But there is a better way than that.
Thee Sacred Souls know it. Josh Lane, Sal Samano and Alec Garcia met in San Diego and together write songs which put old sounds on a pedestal without worshiping them, their music an implicit recognition that you can copy anything – but without heart, a copy is still only a copy.
Signed in a flash to Daptone Records, their first single Can I Call You Rose was one of those once listened, never forgotten songs. Retro in every good way possible, in the wrong hands this soulful longing could’ve been rendered into a cabaret tune for disinterested Vegas buffet eaters, but Lane’s voice instead caressed the grooves, the effect being to make it almost weightless. The past can try a comeback if it wants, but not when the present is this good.
A beautiful song that somehow slipped by me.

There’s also a really good cover version by an artist called Solomon – it’s on YouTube.
