100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #21 Jungle – Back on 74

Released : 2023

“What’s their job?”

“Their job is hits.”

Maybe that’s exactly how it goes down at meetings of Jungle’s various suits and all but by their fourth album Volcano they might’ve been forgiven for suffering from a lack of ideas.

Instead they went for a refinement of a formula which had for the most part been about melding the familiar into something with an energy and vigor that was hard to resist. Much of their work was in effect a remix of itself, but there are times when that’s no bad thing.

Musically it was very obvious that the 74 in question had a silent 19 before it; this wasn’t the first time that Northern Soul had been retooled for the twenty first century after Pharrell Williams’ Happy, but like that, this was an affectionate and respectful pilfering for which you didn’t need to have necked a handful of amphetamines to love. When your job is hits but you love doing it, then you never work a day in your life.
