100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #19 Julie Byrne – Summer Glass

Released: 2023

There are few better musical recommendations to get from anyone than just listen to it. Open ended, the invitation reveals confidence in the sender and respect for the receiver; word of mouth records discovered this way are without exception the joy of an increasingly empty world.

Julie Byrne’s The Greater Wings was a record with a personally tragic backstory; with the singer’s close friend and former producer Eric Littman passing away at only thirty one she found herself frozen by grief, but in the gradual thaw which followed a record emerged full of warmth and joy, cocooning the listener in it’s intimacy.

At times so utterly breathtaking (Flare, Lightning Comes Up From The Ground, closer Death Is The Diamond) the temptation was to keep it a secret, but poise and soul of Summer Glass was all the persuasion necessary for you to stop people in the street and grab them like you were in a cult, let alone messaging friends three or four times a day. Wait for someone to tell you about it. Or better still, don’t.
