100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #15 PinkPantheress ft. Ice Spice – Boy’s a liar Pt.2

Released: 2023

Like it or not, success finds it’s own way. PinkPantheress – Claire Cottrill out of uniform, but that’s more or less all we know – presents a set of cues that are both modern and retro, blending them into something that can appeal universally.

Coming up had been through what has become a now familiar route of building viral presence and taking a mixtape approach. The twist was Pink’s bilateral fascination with the modesty and romanticism of bedroom pop, one that expertly worked duly turned her into one of Britain’s biggest stars. Boy’s A Liar didn’t begin that process, but definitely marked the conclusion of it.

Beguilingly simple with a demure UK Garage loop, the body of the reworked version felt like it was seventy percent chorus and the rest Ice Spice’s cuddly admonishments. Lurking under the twenties sheen though were universal qualities – love, betrayal, coping – that made it just the latest installment in telling a million chapter story. Success finds a way. And it’s usually one we know.
