The Cribs – Selling A Vibe review

Opinions vary related to playing in a band with members of your family (And we all know The Righteous Brothers weren’t really brothers) but what happens when the band you’re in is made up only of your family?

According to Ryan Jarman however The Cribs – him, twin Gary and younger sibling Ross – hadn’t up to the point of ideating around Selling A Vibe ever really sat down and talked about the implications of that fact, of being brothers as opposed to band mates. After the mutual realisation sunk home it then sparked an approach to songwriting that Gary describes as “Rooted in family”.

With the backdrop more personal, hiring in producer Patrick Wimberly (Lil Yachty, Solange) came from a shared desire to imagine the trio’s familiar pop-punk sound in a contempory guise. The resulting makeover is subtle enough not to give up on their inherent power, with the likes of Summer Seizures and Dark Luck straddling any perceived divide. The high points though are the self explanatory closer Brothers Won’t Break and Never The Same, the latter a track crafted with Louis Tomlinson in mind but gloriously Cribsified instead.

What’s it like being in band with members of you clan? Well, if it sounds like this, then it’s very alright.
