Dan Snaith’s last outing as Caribou, 2024’s Honey found him hunkered down alone in his studio, working with tools that would allow him to stretch the identity’s footprint even further outwards. His other alter ego Daphni normally represents the DJ side of his career (Sorry if this is all a bit confusing) – one in which he’s highly sought after and recognised as a floor filler supreme.
It’s reasonable then to expect Butterfly to be club-oriented and this is the case, the mission being to reinforce that ethos, which is as he’s revealed ‘Putting really functional stuff next to weirder tracks might be the thing that’s still most interesting to me’.
The primary bit of weirdness you’ll need to process first is a guest appearance on Waiting So Long from..Caribou. Thankfully the pair don’t choose to duet, but the idea itself in a world where identities can blur elevates the music which backs it. Elsewhere there’s another outing for the somewhat misnomered Sad Piano House, crisp and danceable grooves via Clap Your Hands and Talk To Me, while Invention makes a harpsichord and mouth harp work together with surprising results.
Well above functional and more then weird enough to keep your interest, Butterfly is more confirmation were it even needed that Dan Snaith can be whoever and whatever he wants to be, whilst still giving us exactly what we want.
