The Jim Jones All Stars – Cat fight review

In an era so stacked with irony that well, its really ironic, the streaming boom and vinyl renaissance means that rather than the original innovators of our base music forms, it’s those inspired by them that now seem anachronistic; you can listen to Raw Power and connect with The Stooges now in an instant, whereas sounding like them can feel a little desperate.

Not that The Jim Jones Review would wear accusations like that; their leader was once the jefe of early nineties freak-garage outfit Thee Hypnotics, whilst he’s fronted various troupes in his own name since they split, each one’s reputation for incendiary live performances built on on sweat and stomp.

Firstly, off topic slightly, but Cat Fight has wonderful sleeve art. And clearly the idea has some pulling power, with The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson signing up for production duties and former Green on Red maverick Chuck Prophet also joining in the fun. If you don’t take things too seriously, fun is there to be had with the likes of Make It Rain, Exiled, Goin’ Higher and the title track.

Even a couple of slip ups – Born 2 Ride’s cliched biker joint and the stumbling Bekolah – can’t dim the vibe, and closer Let U Go is a fine send off. Cat Fight shows that keeping up with the Joneses can be just as entertaining as borrowing grandad’s old LP records and grooving round the Dansette.
