Sometimes you have to go through calling yourself all kinds of names before you hit upon the one that is the truth: without wanting to sound too much like some crappy meme, only once you accept yourself can you start to change things.
For Katie Crutchfield – AKA Waxahatchee – that realisation was the cornerstone of getting sober, in the wake of 2017’s Into The Storm, her last album and one rooted in the trauma of a destructive relationship painfully coming to an end.
Saint Cloud is a toast to new beginnings in more ways than one: her most complex yet melodic batch of confessionals to date, musically there’s also an acknowledgement of the country women listened to of her youth, of their sacrifices and redemption.
Now in a relationship with fellow musician Kevin Morby – a personal and professional balancing act celebrated via The Eye – on Saint Cloud the singer has turned a corner in both lives, producing her finest work yet, proof that when it comes to the person staring back at you in the mirror, honesty is always the best policy.
