100 Greatest Songs of the 70’s #30 Roxy Music – Love Is the Drug

Released: 1975

The wikipedia entry for Love Is the Drug keeps it simple, explaining that (singer Bryan) ‘Ferry’s lyrics recount a man going out looking for action’.

Of course. Because in the mid 70’s being out for action was something that you did – and it needed a soundtrack. The song’s origins lay in something with less of a groove, but everyone knew lounge lizards did their work on the dance floor, and if you can’t get your hips moving, you might as well have been standing up against the wall.

Ferry and Roxy knew that Love Is the Drug had everything the beast with two backs needed to be fed, from an absurdly funky low end – Talking Heads were surely listening – to a chorus which made the prey aware that they were being observed. Sometimes at this game you won, sometimes not, but if action was your thing, here was the song to play it to.
