Dry Cleaning – Swampy EP review

For those critics who sneered at Dry Cleaning, ridiculing them as parody, the quartet’s last album Stumpwork was a rebuttal that headed off any lingering doubts about their ability to progress. With the spoken word delivery of Florence Shaw still at it’s centre, musically they explored off the map territories such as ambient noise, funk and indie pop, in the process delivering a very clear message about their future plans.

Swampy is in their words a five track companion EP of material from the Stumpwork sessions that takes the opportunity to showcase further aspects of their canvas. Whilst a couple of the pieces on offer here are slight instrumentals (Sombre Two/Peanuts) and if the titular opener is familiar sounding enough, the two remixes – in particular Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul’s dancefloor ready makeover of Hot Penny Day – hint strongly at more fascinating diversions to come.
