Angel Olsen – Forever Means EP review

Forever Means is a rumination on the subject of whether anyone can ever find an end point that satisfies, or feel closed; it’s one of the human race’s most destructive qualities, but we are rarely content with what we have. The four tracks on it all stem from the Big Time sessions, but as can often happen when an artist gets time to look back on their finished work from a distance, Angel Olsen has decided they’re worthy enough to climb into the outside world.

Each of the quartet have a slightly different feel and an equally variable degree of effectiveness. Nothing’s Free sounds like it’s beamed direct from a Harlem jazz club, whilst the title track is a piece of rust belt Nashville that flirts with melodrama. It’s the rocked out closer Holding On which exhibits the greatest signs of intent, but whilst Forever Means has some interesting dirt roads, like life, attention may quickly move onto other things.
