Hippo Campus – Wasteland EP review

If you’re a relatively successful contemporary pop band, what are your choices? Collaborate with a left field artist to shock up your fans? Focus on content? Do something TikTok only? For Minnesotan quintet Hippo Campus, the idea was less obvious: use Country and Western as a source of inspiration.

It would be a stretch to say that the five songs on Wasteland are modelled directly on the sound of Hank Williams or Johnny Cash (Although for clarity that would be no bad thing), but on Yippie Ky Yay at least some of the rootsy touchstones are there and opener Moonshine is a passably rustic take on Folkore-era Taylor Swift. Urban cowboys can sign up from the bus or subway stop of their choice.
