Drab Majesty – An Object In Motion Review

Drab Majesty’s bio definitely has an only in LA feel: Originally a solo venture for Marraiges drummer Andrew Clinco, the sticks man then adopted an androgynous identity he named Deb Demure, before he was later joined by Alex Nicolaou, who performs as the character Mona D. Coming to greater prominence in 2019 via the debut album Modern Mirror, Clinco has labelled their music ‘tragic wave’ and during the subsequent enforced pandemic layoff worked on his side project, VR Sex.

Phew. Written largely during a sabbatical in rural Orgeon, An Object In Motion is the duo’s first new work since, Clinco/Demure writing the material with the aid of a 12-string Ovation acoustic/electric guitar. Most of the focus will be given to Vanity, which features vocals from slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, but shoegazers will be better off absorbing The Skin And The Glove for their dose of fx-drenched pedal pushing. The 15 minute instrumental closer Yield to Force will satisfy all those who fell that, to that point, things had felt way to orthodox.
