100 Greatest Songs of the 00’s #32 The Rapture – Get Myself Into It

Released: 2006

There is no greater motivation than revenge (exclamation mark!!). When The Rapture came to prominence in 2003 with the release of their debut album Echoes it was in a scrum of hipster dick waving and icy nods (The Face just said “Watch ’em go”), the bone dry funk of their single House of Jealous Lovers bearing a more than passing resemblance to Gang Of Four at their skronky peak.

There were people who liked the New York based quartet for what they were (and some for what they weren’t) but if there was one quality that had defined both the offline and (nu) on music press in Britain for decades, it was a vitriolic pettiness that meant most things once deemed good were there to be sneered at next time round.

Ambushes and people lying in wait were ready for Luke Jenner and co. when they returned in 2006 with Pieces of the People We Love; Drowned in Sound greeted it with a 3/10 and acidic put downs such as “If you want to party like it’s 2004, you better substitute the vodka for chloroform. You have been warned.” None of this stopped Get Myself Into It being a great song of course, ingenious, scratchy art rock in the mode of peak of their powers Talking Heads with Jenner’s bony yowl summoning the disco freaks from off the wall. Bad words from other scribes there were also, but unlike sticks and stones, they can never hurt a guy.
