Water from Your Eyes – Crushed by Everyone review

It’s encouraging that, even though the commercial pressures of the industry mean that any kind of reward is a far off horizon for 99.9% of artists, this doesn’t stop creativity or a desire to experiment. Water From Your Eyes initially gained currency following the release of 2021’s Structure, protagonists Nate Amos and Rachel Brown delivering a genre hopping mix that worked some dormant corners. The critical reception prompted them to be signed by the Matador label, and it’s follow up Everyone’s Crushed was released in the Spring of 2023.

Crushed by Everyone is a remix project, the idea of which seems weirdly archaic in a way, but if the requirement was ever for a diverse, eclectic seeding ground that budding interpreters could work with, then in the context of 2023 Everyone’s Crushed was surely it.

If anything the general course is to bring the original’s elements – art rock, spoken word, odd samples, synth pop – more together into a cohesive whole. Here the title track is reanimated FKA Twigs style into futuristic R&B, whilst Mandy Indiana’s versioning of Remember Not My Name transforms it into a indie night shuffle when you’ve spiked your own booze. Never cohesive – then again neither is the source material – staying weird still sounds great and of course, it’s still great that people are allowed to stay weird.
