Feet – Make It Up review

There are many ways to deconstruct the creative process when things go wrong, but Feet’s George Haverson is more sanguine about how the band’s approach has differed between Make It Up and their 2019 debut What’s Inside Is More Then Just Ham, a change he explains with ‘I feel like we’ve got 12 complete songs on this album and not 12 ideas, before, it felt a bit more like we were throwing sh*t at the wall.’

If that first album was a little manic at times and more reflected their live show, it certainly turned a few heads in the indie world. Now With producer Andy Savours (Black Country New Road, The Magic Gang, The Horrors) along side them, the focus has shifted to keeping the energy whilst still making hummable stuff; it sounds easy, but anything that takes half a decade to do clearly isn’t.

Sounding like they know how to fashion sounds which pay respect to the past on When I’m Feeling Strange (Super Furry Animals), and highlight Truly Awful (Evan Dando/Lemonheads), jovial protest number Sit Down carries the vigor and hooks of old and The Real Thing adds a dash of post punk glam to their bag. Throwing stuff at a wall can work for some, but a bit more nine to five should do the trick for the others. Make It Up suggests Feet could still have room to both.
