As one interviewer pointed out in the moment, Johnny Marr had been in The The for longer than The Smiths existed. Amongst a whole other lot of ventures in the period between forming The Healers and his first band’s messy dissolution, he of all his ex-associates had shown an understanding that the passing of useless time was the enemy.
The chatter around a reformation had never stopped (And twenty years later that’s still the case), but The Healers – the now multi-instrumentalist producer, along with Zak Starkey and Alonza Bevan – constituted for him a different kind of pressure. Typically confident, as a singer he went about the new role of front man with few cares about levels, despite the inevitable scrutiny.
Largely due to his workaholic schedule Boomslang took some time to fully form, debut single The Last Ride having first appeared a couple of years earlier. It’s main constituents went against the grain (Nu metal, grime, scuzzy Brooklyn post punk) in being rooted in blues rock, psychedelia and Britpop, a decision that probably cost some critical kudos, but has prevented it from aging, per se.
Twenty-ish years on, this deluxe Edition was remastered by Marr at Abbey Road, whilst the original roster is bolstered by seven previously unreleased tracks and an instrumental version and new mix of You Are The Magic. Had this been the end of his solo career it might’ve been something of an anti-climax, but today it represents an interesting, if not essential, first chapter.
