The Linda Lindas – No Obligation review

Ok, there’s a whiff of novelty to the Linda Linda’s story – pre teen punks go viral on the back of a single performance – but their cred points to the movement’s openness to all ages and matinee roots, an approach that go back to the Our Band Could Be Your Life era. Kids play shows.

The quartet’s debut album Growing Up was more surprising for it’s versatility in terms of songwriting. In canny recognition of how easy it is to get boxed into this niche, it traversed everything from indie to the thrashy, knee high hardcore that made them famous in the first place.

With most of them still too young to drive it’s follow up has the advantage of being ridicule proof or getting decried with sell out accusations by the narrow minded. No Obligation is to use the phrase in it’s broadest sense a more mature record, All In My Head adroitly stepping on Beach Bunny‘s paws, with Resolution / Revolution by contrast having some real heads down gravity. It’s the title track which points the way however, a Riot Grrrl thrash with some true shredding heft. Quirky history or not, put the grown ups in detention and make them listen.
