So let’s start this one with the time-honoured “You probably won’t have heard of Blake Mills, but have a little faith, because merely listening to this one song will make you as immeasurably cool as us.”
Ok. Let’s back up. You genuinely might not have heard of Blake Mills, but that’s no slight on your personal reputation. An elite session musician and producer, his list of credits is absolutely formidable and includes Bob Dylan, Weyes Blood, Fiona Apple, Beck and Perfume Genius, to name a few.
Mills has also been quietly releasing material of his own and jointly written with Cass McCombs 2020’s Mutable Set was one of the year’s most brilliantly understated and unconventional singer-songwriter records. Money Is The One True God was a tremulous reflection on greed-as-worship, the grim ubiquitous cost of 21st century piety summed up with “Nowhere is there salvation without wealth”. You probably won’t have heard it before, but now, you have.
