Jenny on Holiday – Quicksand Heart

There are solo projects and then there are solo projects, but the title of Jenny Hollingworth’s first album away from her usual part as one half of Let’s Eat Grandma is meant jokingly, the project a vacation rather than a new vocation.

Together with her childhood friend Rosa Walton the witchy psych pop of 2016’s I, Gemini drew comparisons to Kate Bush, by their last release Two Ribbons was coloured by the death of Hollingworth’s close friend Billy Clayton.

The recovery process found the singer writing new material in her adolescent bedroom in Norwich, before eventually hooking up with Grammy nominated producer Steph Marziano. The results are lyrically self effacing whilst for the most part the music leans towards glossy retro synth pop on tracks such as Pacemaker and closer Appettite, but it’s the more densely layered Every Ounce of Me and Do You Believe In Me? that ultimately offer the most promise.

Sometimes it’s just better to pack a bag and go. Quicksand Heart is Jenny Hollingworth going to come back, a journey that doesn’t need tickets or a map.
