We need to deal with a couple of things right off the bat here. Yes, this album is themed around slime, or the idea that life is malleable and impossible to shape like slime. And yes, Life Slime has sleeve art so bad it feels like something you’d see on an Instagram album cover parody acccount.
Brevity means you’ll need to google why Johnny Lynch – AKA Pictish Trail – has become so obsessed with slime since the release of his last full album Island Family, to the extent that it supposedly even makes an appearance here, but the most salient point is that in mood Life Slime is a breakup album, although as you might’ve figured out from all the adjacent stuff, it’s rarely orthodox in that respect.
This manifests itself in one Kleenex ready moment in Torch Song, but the more interesting contrivances see Lynch experimenting with auto tune on the opener Hold It, splattering himself with electro-psychedelic squelches on Battery Pack before not for the first time in his career getting to synth pop nirvana via Sorry Eyes. Weird and sometimes wonderful, Life Slime gives heartbreak a gooey makeover; for best results, bring an open mind – and a towel.
